My 18th Birthday- 'tis the season to be jolly!

On the 21st of December it was my birthday! I had my first ever party. Loads of pictures were taken, but I haven't managed to get my hands on many of them yet, I am afraid. Quite a few of my friends brought their instruments along and we had lots of jamming. It was great. Patrick and I played 'Hallelujah' by Jeff Buckley, and we also played Scarborough fair, and some others. I received some amazing presents from my friends too, including
  • felt tips,
  • a teapot for one,
  • scarves,
  • hats,
  • mittens,
  • biscuits,
  • mugs...
  • a CD: 'The Magic Position' by Patrick Wolf (check him out!)
  • a top,
  • my Evenstar pendant! (yes yes, i am a Lord of the Rings geek!)
  • and of course, my Dress! Elbe made it for me!!!
My dad gave me some red converse, and my mum and her boyfriend gave me some perfume. 'Flower' by Kenzo.

After the party, Kim, Tasha, Elbe, Tilly, Kat, Hannah, Alice, Zoe, Becca, Dan and Richard all went to Pablo's for pizza, and after that, i went for my first legal pub-drink. I felt all grown up! Becca gave me money to get Pear Cider, and beer, and we all sat outside. Unfortunately, we got moved along because I was the only one with ID, so that was a bit annoying. The bar-guy did give us plastic cups to be going along with though!!

here are a few pictures: I don't think the evening could have gone any better! although the day was a bit ropey, as our car broke down in the middle of the motorway, and it was mightily stressful!!!

In other news:

Elbe managed to get us second row tickets to see 'The Mighty Boosh' in November! And I got another university offer. Cardiff wants me to get two Bs and a C! wowee!

Winter

walking home from the station at about ten thirty last night, i had one of those moments where being alive feels perfect. there was a beautiful fireworks display going on, which somehow lasted exactly the amount of time that it took me to walk from the station, to my house, and was always visible. ice had settled on the puddles, and frost was making everything glitter under the light of the fireworks, and the street lamps. i was listening to 'the wreck is not a boat' by Sons of Noel and Adrian (www.myspace.com/sonsofnoelandadrian) on my iPod, and even though it was so cold, i could no longer feel my chin, it was still a really wonderful moment.

speaking of chins, a moment of vanity is necessary here: i have noticed recently that my chin is really horrible. i barely have to bend my head down at all, and there it is, all double, and horrid! i hate my jaw-line. but anyway, i don't want to turn this into a thesis on my self-loathing...

it is five days until my birthday. i am quite excited because this is the first PARTY i have ever had, but this does give rise to some stress because now there is the whole issue of people perhaps not turning up, and/or not enjoying themselves.

my friend elbe is MAKING me a dress. It is a surprise, so i am going for a "blind fitting" on tuesday. i will have to wear a blind-fold and gloves, so i can't even feel the dress fabric with my hands! it is really exciting, because she is a good dress-maker. she made her own prom dress last year and it was really striking!

today i went for a walk in the country with jacob. we got sheets of ice out of a small lagoon thing, and then threw them onto the plates of ice floating on the top of the water and watched them shatter into thousands of glittering icy shards. it was really beautiful. everything in the countryside shines. then we walked by the river, and sat about in the cold for a bit. it was not an eventful day. but it felt just like a sunday should, i suppose.

yesterday, we made a lot of money with our busking! here we are, busking:
left to right: freya, me, kat, tilly. we busked at a fair-trade fair at a quaker meeting house, and in other parts of the town. i wish that chair wasn't in the way in the photo, because without it, the photo would be really nice.

my plans for the week are as follows:
monday: Do the rest of my Sylvia Plath gender essay.
tuesday: Go for my "blind fitting" for my birthday dress.
wednesday: "christmas day" at kirsty's house. this will involve christmas carols around her piano, destroying mince pies with colourful icing, and creating mayhem in her kitchen.
thursday: last minute preparations for my birthday party, including shopping for bits of food, satsumas etc, and er... washing my hair hahaha!
friday: on this day, i plan to receive lots of gifts, and have a party. after my party, i am going out for late dinner with Kim, Tash, Tilly, Kat, and some others.

so, to bed with me now, for i am mighty tired.

i might listen to some heavy duty Rachmaninoff before i do though...

post-feminist in a post-patriarchy

today, i wore a T-shirt which had "i'm a post-feminist in a post-patriarchy" emblazoned on it. i was being ironic, but i would consider myself a feminist. it really annoys me that feminism has that stigma attached to it of women being 'anti-men' or militant lesbians. that stigma was of course put in place by men! in actual fact, feminism is about men and women being treated equally.

on the other hand, someone once suggested to me: what if men and women AREN'T equal? in some ways, we aren't, for example, it cannot be denied that men are on average physically stronger than women. in my opinion, this should not change the way that men and women are TREATED. anyhow, as i was saying, what if we AREN'T equal to men. what then? an interesting thought.

i went busking today with my band, and freya. no original material, just christmas carols, but we did manage to make over thirty pounds in half an hour! we were singing in four part harmony, so it deserved it really! we got asked by this random woman to sing outside the quaker meeting house tomorrow. it was like being talent-spotted... but not as good! ha!

here is a picture of me and my band.
i am on the left, kat is in the middle, and tilly is on the right. we are dressed as romans, of course! our 'sound' is a cross between Regina Spektor, Bat For Lashes, Yann Tiersen, Piano Jazz, a barbershop quartet (but there are only three of us!), and other weird stuff! i play the piano, and other keyboard instruments. i also begin most of the songs. the other two sing, play the psultry, the violin, and percussion. i would love to make it big... but it is fun right now!

i have been obsessed with this really strange Italian film for a while. it is called 'Tre Metri Sopra Il Cielo'. i have only ever seen it in Italian with no subtitles, so i don't really even know what is going on in it. and the sound track is full of cheesy Italian pop music... but i really do love it somehow. it is the one thing i have to thank my french exchange student for... anyway, i watched it with tilly, and she finally saw what i had been going on about for the past year.

Tomorrow night is Naomi's birthday, and we are going out for dinner. and it is a week today until my birthday.

My Wishlist:

  1. Elbe is making me a surprise dress. i will wear it to my party!
  2. Tre Metri Sopra Il Cielo DVD so i can finally watch it with subtitles!
  3. Red Converse (not the ankle boots... the low, shoe ones)
  4. A pair of "lucky pants". i need some luck, and also some nice knickers!
  5. A book of sheet music by Ludovico Einaudi (his music is amazing!)
  6. Nice perfume. i accidentally a special edition of 'Flower' by Kenzo, but i wanted the normal one...
  7. My mum is knitting me a tank top, which is striped like a bee! (i know it may sound geeky, but i think it is going to be amazing!)
so for now, i sign off. i am going to make myself a red-Leicester sandwich... :)

stress!

wow, things are really hotting up at college.

there are two more days left of term, and everyone is very very stressed out. the upper sixth always write a sixth-form entertainment, parodying all of the teachers, and the school in general, for the last day of term, and so dutifully, we spent the last few weeks writing it, only to find today that it has been heavily censored.

tension is running high.

i have been away at my cambridge interviews, on monday and tuesday, so today was my first day back. i met some amazing people, and had some really interesting debates with fellow undergraduate interviewees about the terror limit (there was a right winger who was against, and a leftie who was pro! i was sat in the middle of them enjoying the debate washing over me!), and of course there was the whole Richard Dawkins debate. I think that everyone should at least look him up if they can't read some of his work. he is certainly fascinating to debate about!

anyway, the interviews themselves were actually quite interesting! i got asked some tricky questions such as:

Christians have been made to feel like they must apologise for the crusades. Do you think that modern Muslims have anything to learn from this?

so, that was quite a difficult one! everyone seemed nice though.

nice, what a word. but sometimes it is the only word that will do! i don't know if anyone else finds that, but some things are just nice.

in my next post i will start to attach photos and things like that! so there is something to look forward to. my band had a photoshoot today. i make it sound so glamorous! but really it was us in a basement with our friend Kathryn taking photos of us in togas against a tin foil backdrop! still, if she has sent them to me, i will upload some!

the band has some pretty cool songs. we just wrote one called 'Sinister Ears'

anyway, that is enough for now; i have a really horrible, big essay on sylvia plath in for tomorrow!

First Post

right, well...

i have always been wary of getting a blog, because i have kept a diary since i was eight, and i didn't want to stop writing in it. and i haven't written in it for a long time, come to think of it. i really should.

i was considering doing the whole videoblog vlogging thing, but it seemed like so much hassle, and also everyone would hear my voice, and see my glasses, and so on. i like to keep the air of mystery alive. haha!

the main reasons i have started this are as follows:

  1. it is late at night
  2. i have this weird sort of dream of becoming an internet sensation.
  3. i want to share my weirdness with the world in an odd sort of way... if i can keep this up, then you will soon discover what i mean!
i have been wanting to write a story for a while now. i mean, i have had all of these ideas in my head, which i have really wanted to exist... a parallel world, almost. and it occurred to me that the only way they could ever exist was if i wrote them down in some sort of narrative format!

i don't want to go on too much in the first ever post, because i don't want to put everyone off!

i also like making lists, so here are some things. in a list format:

  1. i rarely use capital letters when i am typing. sorry if this confuses people.
  2. i adore music. classical, rock, indie, pop music from the sixties and seventies...
  3. A-levels are stressing me out big time!
  4. i watch a lot of films, when i am trying not to do schoolwork.
Bon Nuit, everyone.
